About Desolation Sound

Desolation Sound is a kayakers and boaters paradise. The intricate network of coastline composed of inlets, islands, coves, lagoons, bays, anchorages and launching sites makes Desolation Sound one of the most chosen and revered boating and kayaking destinations in the world bar none. Desolation Sound holds a magical appeal to it - drawing visitors to its waters year after year to experience the surplus of remote and pristine wilderness sites it supports. The jutting forested mountains rising straight out of the water and the lack of inhabitants are why Captain George Vancouver named this area "Desolation" although desolate couldn't be further from the truth. This is the outdoor enthusiast's paradise!

This is true Canadian Wilderness with plenty of isolated bays and campsites. Freshwater lakes are abundant and often only a short stroll through the forest from the sea.

Marine Wildlife abound in Desolation Sound. Osyters proliferate in this area as they love the naturally nutrient rich and warm waters. This attracts predators to forage for them. Predators such as sea stars move stealthily over shelffish colonies. The usual suspects of shore birds can be found in Desolation Sound. Kingfishers, Great Blue Herons, Bald eagles, Mergansers, Marbled Murrelets and, of course, Oystercatchers thrive here.

Our guides on many trips pull out their fishing rods to catch fish. They do it for the love of fishing and to add to many of our meals on our trips. Desolation Sound has so many opportunities to fish. As mentioned, oysters thrive here so that is an instant meal for shellfish lovers. Salmon, rockfish, prawns, and cod are other likely candidates to be found at the end of your pole as well. Delish!

Desolation Sound is home to Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park which has more than 60 km of shoreline and 8,449 hectares (20 000 acres) in size, making it the largest protected marine park in Canada. The park encompasses Malaspina Inlet and Gifford Peninsula, the northern end of Lancelot Inlet, and the shore of Desolation Sound to a mile past Prideaux Haven.

Traveling to Desolation Sound

Desolation Sound is located at the northern end of British Columbia's Sunshine Coast, accessed from the tiny town of Lund. Lund is located only 104 miles/166 km north of Vancouver, but it takes over five hours (including two BC Ferry rides) to get there. Further south is Powell River, the largest town on the Sunshine Coast. Desolation Sound can also be accessed by boat from Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island, Heriot Bay on Quadra Island, and from Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
