About Cape Scott and St. Josef Bay
Cape Scott is a markedly beautiful B.C. provincial park located at Vancouver Island's northwestern tip. It's pristine beaches and forests are storied among outdoor enthusiasts but getting here is not easy and the Cape's distant, isolated location makes the journey more rewarding for those who make the effort to come here. The Cape's protected, pristine temperate forests make this a hiker's paradise and St. Josef's Bay is becoming increasinly popular among kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts. Some kayakers capitalize on the Cape's notorious storms by surf kayaking St. Josef Bay's often impressive waves. Traveling to Cape ScottPort Hardy, where the Vancouver Island Highway literally ends, is the starting point for most Cape Scott adventures. Getting here requires all travellers coming from Vancouver to take the B.C. Ferry to Nanaimo and drive north as far as you can go. From Port Hardy, there is a logging road that continues to Cape Scott or experienced paddlers can kayak there through the Queen Charlotte Strait. Those without a vehicle can look into bus or shuttle schedules from Vancouver Island Coach Lines or North Island Transportation and those looking to travel fast at a surprisingly reasonable price can explore the option of taking a scenic float plane ride to Port Hardy.
