About the Cowichan Valley

On a Clayoquot Sound, Vancouver Island kayaking trip

The Cowichan Valley is located on the soutern half of Vancouver Island between Victoria and Nanaimo. There is a wealth of recreational activities to explore here from wine tasting at the valley's vineyards, to hiking, mountain biking and best of all, kayaking. In the Coast Salish First Nations language, Cowichan means "land warmed by the sun" and those travelling to the Cowichan Valley in the summertime will likely be greeted with sunshine. The Cowichan Valley is being increasingly recognized for its wine country, even being nicknamed "Napa of the North."

Kayaking in and around the Cowichan Valley

There are many opportunities within the Cowichan Region. The Cowichan's eastern shores border countless bays, channels and inlets that make for ideal paddling. Between Cowichan Bay at the southeast end of the valley and Ladysmith Harbour on the valley's northeasy end, there are countless sites to launch. There is also Cowichan Lake which is an impressively large mountain paddling spot. Cowichan Lake is over 30 km in length and is the second largest freshwater body on Vancouver Island. There are also popular kayaking spots in the Cowichan River such as Skutz Falls, Horseshoe Bend and Marie Canyon. Those interested in whitewater paddling will also find good adventure in the Koksilah and Chemainus rivers.... the best paddling will be in the winter.
