About Gibsons

Finding a place to go kayaking near Gibsons is not going to be difficult. Situated at the mouth of Howe Sound, this coast village is known as the "Gateway to The Sunshine Coast". It offers excellent paddling opportunities in the calmer waters of Shoal Channel between Keats Island and the sunshine coast in Howe Sound or along the sunshine coast in the more open waters of Georgia Strait. For centuries, likely millenia, this village and its surrounding waterways have been home to the Chekwelps of the Squamish First Nations people -the people of the sacred water, evidenced by the presence of middens in the area. The Chekwelps relocated to Squamish in the 1890s after a smallpox outbreak, ending their settlement in the area. The town of Gibsons was established in 1886 by Captain George Gibson. Today it is a thriving community hosting jazz and arts festivals, free summer outdoor concerts and the Gibsons Fall Fair. It is also the host of the Howe Sound Outrigger Canoe Race. There are several restaurants, shops, summer cottages and hotels for those making their way through town. Those interested in learning about the towns rich history should check out the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives in the Gibson's harbour.
