Are There Events & Competitions?

Yes there are many competitions for pro kayakers around the world every year. These range from whitewater to surf kayaking and have excellent competition from some of the worlds best kayakers. It has also become an olympic event and is attended by some of the best kayakers who compete for the best times as well as points for passing through difficult areas in the competition.

Professional Pro Events, Racing & Competition

 

For many years there have been professional kayaking events, after the construction of the Rob Roy it would not be many years before there was an event for these crafts added to the Olympic events.

Today there are events for these crafts and their owners in places that show new models, that let the owners of these crafts show their skills and let fishermen that use this type of craft to take them to their fishing spot participate in events to show their skill for both hobbies.

Some of these professional events are the Vancouver Boat Show that is held in Western Canada and is the largest event of this kind; the Seattle Boat Show is the largest show held on the West Coast. There is also the Wave Chaser Race Series held in Santa Cruz Harbor in California, in which surf kayak models are some of the models used and the World Surf Kayaking US Team Trials, this is held at the Pico Creek State Beach in San Simeon, California as well. There is the Rollapoolooza that is held in Raleigh North Carolina and is an event that is rolls used when in whitewater and held in an Olympic sized swimming pool.

Pelican Island Wildlife Festival that is held at Vero Beach, Florida, is a kayak race and a poker run and in New York there is a Long Island Paddle Sport Symposium that is held in the Long Island waterways as a keep safe event.

For fishermen who want to show their skill at both hobbies there is an event at Mission Bay California there is the Plastic Navy Fishing Tournament Trail, this consists of a series of six events that are catch and release saltwater bass. The Jacksonville Kayak Fishing Classic that is held in Jacksonville Florida, this event is to promote kayak fishing and fish that are the catch of the day in this event are Redfish, Trout and Flounder. In years gone by this event has seen the worlds largest attendance of any kayak event with approximately two hundred and thirty paddlers entered in the event and the event also raises funds for local charities for children and conservation efforts.

The owner who just wants to join in the fun but may not want to compete there are events at Franklin Louisiana is the home of the Bayou Teche Bear Festival Paddle and it consists of a ten-mile paddle on the bayou, this is one event that is free for any owner of a kayak that wants to participate. A professional Washington event is the Columbia River Paddlefest and this begins with a kayaking movie and a Paddle Fest paddle day that is open to anyone who owns a kayak.

One last event that needs to be mentioned is kayak racing as an event in the Special Olympics and is referred to as a demonstration sport.
