Quadra Island, British Columbia, Canada
About Quadra Island
Quadra Island is the largest of B.C.'s famously beautiful Discovery Islands. The island is situated not far from Discovery passage between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland. The island, its charming communities and breathtaking scenery, draws travelers from across the globe, especially in the summer months. There are three main communities on Quadra Island: Quathiaski Cove, Heriot Bay and Cape Mudge or Yuculta. Quathiaski Cove is the commercial center to the island and home to the largest percentage of Quadra's 4,000 residents. Heriot Bay is a picturesque town on the eastern side of the island. While small, Heriot Bay has been an established community much longer than most British Columbia towns, long serving as a stopping point for large ships traveling the coast. Yuculta is the longtime home of the Kwagiulth First Nations people and across the Discovery Islands, there is evidence of an ancient aboriginal presence here. For example, travelers at Wa Wa Kie Beach and Francisco Point will notice petroglyphs(ancient rock paintings) at the high tide line. Quadra Island is a hub for outdoor explorations of the Discovery Islands. Fishing, kayaking, canoeing and sailing are all popular activities in the island's surrounding waterways while mountain biking and hiking are celebrated land activities. There are also several freshwater lakes within the island that are ideal kayaking and canoeing destinations. We may be partial, but in our humble opinion, kayaking is the way to explore the Quadra Islands and Discovery Islands. Kayak expeditions allow for in-depth explorations of the islands as these small, easily maneuvered vessels can provide access to otherwise unreachable coves and protected channels. Multi-Day Kayak Trips from Quadra IslandQuadra Island is an ideal launchsite for multi-day explorations of the entire Discovery Islands region. Quadra Island is a gateway to countless sheltered ocean channels, inlets and offshore islands. It would be easy to spend days exploring the waters and forests within the Discovery Islands alone but keep in mind that a short paddle eastward is the celebrated(and isolated) beauty of Desolation Sound. Rising Sun's Kayak adventures to these locations are available throughout the summer months on a custom booking basis only. Please contact us at any time to schedule your custom group trip to the Discovery Islands or Desolation Sound.
