About Sechelt

Finding a place to go kayaking near Sechelt is not going to be difficult. Situated on the Sechelt Isthmus, between the Strait of Georgia and Sechelt Inlet, this narrow Sunshine Coast village is literally surrounded by beckoning waterways. In fact the name "Sechelt" in the shishalh First Nations language means "land between two waters." For centuries, likely millenia, this village and its surrounding waterways have been home to the Sechelt Indian Band also know as the shishalh people. Throughout Sechelt Inlet, pictographs documenting the band's ancient presence can be seen. The Sechelt First Nations people are unique in that it is one of the few nations that has been given the status of being an elite, self-governing body. This status was returned to the Sechelt Band in 1986 after many years of struggle. Today, the Sechelt Indian Government District holds jurisdiction over its land and public services such as education to its residents. The town of Sechelt is no longer home to exclusively Sechelt people and through the years, the town has developed into somewhat of a Sunshine Coast tourism hub. There are several restaurants, shops, summer cottages and hotels for those making their way through town. Those interested in learning about the towns rich history should take in the the Tems Swiya Museum which shares the culture and history of the shishalh people.
