About Ucluelet

Resting at the northern edge of the Barkley Sound, Ucluelet(pronounced yew-klew-let), is kind of like Tofino's equally beautiful but less expensive sister. Ucluelet is one of Vancouver Island's oldest communities and it is the longtime home of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations people who have sustained themselves off the area's rich land and waters for many millenia. Its residents were exclusively Nuu-chah-nulth until the mid-19th century when seal fur traders began set up a post near the southern edge of town, at Spring Cove. Since, the village has developed similarily to many Vancouver Island aboriginal communities, evolving into a commercial logging and fishing hub destination. Most recently, the tourism industry has been capitalizing on Ucluelet's impressive beauty and several resorts, restaurants and even a golf course are in store for this tight-knit community of about 2,000 people.

Multi-Day Kayak Trips from Ucluelet

The water of the Barkley Sound which borders the south Ucluelet is home to the Broken Islands, which are one of three main recreation points to the Pacific Rim National Park. Every year, Rising Sun paddles through this maze of over 100 islands, camping on a different island each night and exploring old-growth forests and the area's rich native history. The waters surrounding Ucluelet are no stranger to paddles, kayaks and canoes. In fact, the name Ucluelet takes its name from the Nuu-chah-nulth phrase Yu-clutl-ahts which means, "the people with a good landing place for canoes." Traveling to Ucluelet

Just driving to Ucluelet is an enjoyable trip in itself. If making your way from Vancouver, you will need to take a B.C. Ferry to Nanaimo. If this is your first time to B.C., then the ferry ride will be a treat, traveling across the Georgia Strait sandwiched by British Columbia's sublime snow-capped mountains. In Nanaimo you will connect with the Island Highway going north, a.k.a. the Transcanada or Highway 1. Once headed north on the Island Highway, begin looking for Highway #4 or 4a towards Coombs or Port Alberni. Follow this road as far as it will take you until you reach Ucluelet junction. At the junction, hang a left and you will reach Ucluelet at the end of the road. After Port Alberni you will be driving directly through Pacific Rim National Park and you will be treated to breathtaking views of mountains, rivers and lakes.
